October 20th, 2009

Building a backyard play area with a wooden swing set is a creative way of utilizing your backyard space while at the same time providing a functional recreational area for your children. The addition of an outdoor wood swing set will definitely increase the value of your yard.

The good thing about a wood swing set is the fact that it can last longer as compared to other types of swing sets. In addition, a backyard swing set will definitely look nice on your backyard. When building your own,  you have the option to either make it from scratch or purchase pre-fabricated do it yourself wooden swing set kits.

Pre-made DIY wooden swing set kits already come in easy-to-assemble packs wherein you just have to put the pieces together to come up with a ready-made wooden swing set. However, making your own wood swing set will be more economical and practical. Besides, building one is a very straight-forward process. You do not need to be an expert to be able to produce a beautiful and functional wood swing set.

Before you start with the construction phase, you need to first devise your plans. Visualize how you would want the swing set to look like. List down the materials needed so you can check whether they are available at home or not. Decide on what features you would want the swing to have. It is important that the design plan has already been laid out before you begin with the construction to ensure the success of the project.

After ironing out the plan, you can now gather the materials. You would need treated wood posts, quick-dry cements, swings, chains, lag bolts, socket drive, circular saw, drill and rope. Once all the materials have been gathered, you need to clear out the area where you will place the finished swing set.

Start by digging the 6 post holes that is about 18 inches deep. Make sure that each post is at least 4 feet apart at the ends and 6 feet apart lengthwise. Next, set the post onto the holes then level and secure them with the use of quick-drying cement. Ensure that the visible posts are 8 feet in height.

After which, attach the crossbeams to complete the base frame of the swing set. Place in a 4-foot crossbeam in between the post, which should form a U when done. Secure them by drilling holes for the lag bolts. In the middle of the previous 4-foot crossbeams, attach another one which will run down the center of the swing set.

Once done, you may now attach the chains of the swing on the upper beam. Make sure to secure them properly to avoid falling accidents. And voila, you have already come up with a cheap wooden swing set that is functional and visually appealing. You may now congratulate yourself for a job well done!
