Hand Wood Carving Tools

December 22nd, 2009

Wood carving is such a neat hobby. A lot of people do this as a hobby and some go to shows and people watch them as they create things out of wood. Some people get paid big money to do this type of work. Imagine the shapes that can be formed just from a piece of wood. In order to do this properly, though, hand wood carving tools will be needed. Originally, people began carving furniture or things like that out of wood.

Gouges are one of the most popular tools used for the art of carving. Gouges are kind of like chisels, only they curve instead of being flat. There are a variety of sizes and shapes that a person can buy for this type of tool. One can also buy a wood carving kit that has different sizes and styles of these gouges in it. Buying kits can save someone a few dollars; versus buying one at a time. Some kits can cost around $40.00. There are complete kits that can cost around $120.00. These kits come with many tools and patterns.

Many people buy what is called a Whetstone to keep their tools sharp. There is nothing worse than a dull tool when carving wood. Light machine oil will be a necessary item to buy when one purchases a Whetstone. The oil will be put on the stone each time a toll is sharpened.

Other tools for carving wood are wood clamps, carving knives (can be power carving knives, too), crosscut saws, wood files, sandpaper (fine, medium, and course), and wire brushes. A person may want to consider buying a thumb guard, as well. The wire brushes are used for something different. There are things called abraders. These are kind of the same as Whetstones. Indians used them for shaping wood, stones, and bones, or as a file. Usually, they were used to finish up a project and make it look polished.

There are books people can purchase, too, that are for beginners or advanced wood carvers. Some books may have patterns in them or they simply show someone how to do the carving of wood.

Using hand wood carving tools to carve wood is a little more time consuming, but some people simply have this craft installed into their entire being. It would not matter if these people had just a small utility knife. Some people can pick up a piece of wood, look at an example of what they want to carve, and they turn that piece of wood into a duplicate of what they wanted, sometimes the wood carving looks even better than the real life object that was the example. Wood carvers find this art to be fun and relaxing.

Wood Carving Set

December 22nd, 2009

There are many types of wood carving sets. For a beginner the most highly recommended wood carving set is the standard type. This set may include all the basic necessities to create beautiful wood carvings and is simple enough for a beginner to use.

A standard set should include a combination of safety supplies such as a finger or thumb guards, along with a small lightweight pair of goggles. Also included in a standard carving set is a good knife. This is an essential piece of equipment for wood carvers. Most standard kits include a knife that is between one and a half to one and seven eighths inch blades. A good set may include both sizes. The wood carving knife most normally comes with a thin handle for good grip and comfort. A well made quality carving knife is the most important piece of equipment a wood carver owns. Carving knives come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. Finding one that fits the hand comfortably is important.

Another piece of equipment in a standard wood carving kit is a variety of sharpening tools. This piece of equipment is as important as the carving knife because a knife that has no way of being sharpened is a useless piece of equipment. When using a dull knife you increase the chances that you will get cut, and you will not be able to produce well made carvings with a dull knife. A sharpening stone is what most wood carvers choose to use as a sharpening tool. Along with the sharpening stone you should also have a strop on hand.

Wood is of course, the most essential part of carving and many standard carving sets come with sample pieces of either butternut or basswood. These types of wood are a favorite among wood carvers. Because basswood is soft, it is easy to carve which works well for beginners that are new to the trade. Butternut is also a soft wood with a very nice grain which aides in turning out high quality carvings.

Woodcarving gouges come in a variety of sizes. Most standard wood carving sets will include at least one gouge that is a standard of miniature size. Miniature gouges are used for carving the small, fine work that requires great detail.
