Gate hinges are indispensable products that are designed to allow the gate to open or close. These are basically a type of joint mechanism that allows a section or the entire gate to swing open to allow entry. Hinges come in a wide assortment of sizes, styles, designs, and styles. In fact, each available type is created to serve a certain purpose. In that case, it would really be helpful if you become familiar with the different hinge types available to ensure that you will find one that is appropriate for your gate.  On that regard, below are some of the popular hinge types that you should closely assess.

•    Strap hinges – This type of hinge feature two identical metal straps extending onto the gate’s surface and effectively adjoining the fence. Gate strap hinges make use of a sealed pin at the gate’s pivot point. These hinges are best suited for antique looking, wider, and bigger gates. They are capable of providing a sturdy support hence why they are commonly used in heavy and larger gates.

•    T-hinges – T-type hinges work better when attaching narrow and wall mount gates. A t-hinge is comprised of a strap hinge placed on the gate and a short, vertical hinge leaf plate attached on the post. T-hinges are available in varying rustic and antique finishes.

•    Pivot or Double action hinges – Gate pivot hinges feature an L-shaped lag bolt or strap that has a vertical pin securing the gate post, as well as a looped end strap carrying the gate that hinges in the post anchor’s pin. The pivot or double action hinge is considered as the oldest type available.

•    Butt hinges – Gate butt hinges resemble like that of a standard residential hinge. They have two matching leaf plates that can either have fixed or removable hinge pins. This type of hinge can be mortised or surface mounted onto the gate and post. They work particularly well in metal framed gates since they can be welded onto them or can also be attached with screws.

•   Spring hinges – These hinges make use of an internal spring tension. To open the gate, the spring is placed under tension, and the gate can only be closed by releasing that tension. Gate spring hinges can come with either a single or double spring cylinder. Hinges using a single spring cylinder are perfect for gates that only swing in one direction. On the other hand, hinges using a double spring cylinder allow gates to swing up to 180 degrees, and can be closed from any direction (either from the opening side or the opposite).

Whatever type of hinge you decide to use for your gate, make sure to select one that will complement ts style and finish. More importantly, it should be able to fully support the overall weight of the gate.
