Advantages of Concrete Pavers for Walkways

Adding a walkway to your home is a great way to add a functional footpath for whatever purpose you may need while also adding style and beauty to your front, side, or backyard. The main materials used for these walkways are generally concrete and asphalt, but an overlooked material is the paver. Concrete paving stones offer many advantages over other materials for the homeowner interested in building a paver walkway.

First, concrete pavers are more durable than other materials. Asphalt and concrete form huge, thick slabs that have little flexibility. When the ground below the concrete freezes, it puts pressure on the slab, eventually forming cracks and breaks. A poorly-installed asphalt or concrete walkway can crack after one season; even a well-installed walkway will crack eventually. However, concrete paver walkways don’t have this problem because of the joints between the brick. They provide both strength and flexibility for the walkway.

Another advantage of concrete pavers is that they can be installed by the homeowner, provided he or she has the requisite skills, experience, and tools. Concrete and asphalt are difficult to work with and lay, while concrete pavers can be laid by the homeowner as long as the base is properly installed and graded. This is perhaps the hardest part of the process, but the actual laying of the brick is quite easy as long as the installation is properly planned out.

A final advantage of pavers over other materials for walkways is their design capabilities. It is very easy to throw in curves, for example, in a concrete paver walkway. The number of colors, shapes, and sizes of walkway paving stones dwarfs all the possible designs for asphalt and concrete. In addition, a large number of laying patterns can be selected by the homeowner depending on budget, taste, and degree of difficulty.
