Flannel sheets are usually bought for their warmth and softness. For that reason it is important to not only select the right sheets but to know the proper way of caring for flannel sheets. If cared for incorrectly, they can end up piling and being more uncomfortable then sleeping on the carpet.
Many people make the mistake of washing flannel sheets with fabric softener, or drying them with dryer sheets. This is one fabric that the use of fabric softener on is a big no-no. Instead of using fabric softener, it is recommended that you use white vinegar. The first time they are washed, they should be washed in warm, not hot water and then tumbled dry. All subsequent washes should include a half of a cup of white vinegar in the washer during the rinse cycle. Some people add the white vinegar right into their washing machines built in fabric dispenser so that they do not forget to add it. Using white vinegar during the rinse cycle will help to maintain your flannel sheets and eliminate any piling. You can either hang the sheets outside or dry them by tumbling them in a dryer, but either way you should avoid any type of fabric softener. One of the best features of flannel sheets is that they will usually get softer the more that you wash them.
Kids flannel sheets can be more than just warm they can also be a lot of fun to buy! Most bed sheets you buy based on the thread count. However, when you are buying flannel sheets, choosing ones that indicate the fabric weighs 5 or 6 ounces per yard, will ensure you are buying a quality flannel. You should not be able to see through them when you hold them up. This same rule should apply when you are buying kids flannel sheets to ensure you kids have a warm and cozy night of sleep too.
