Breakfast nooks are the rooms directly off of kitchens where most families gather for a majority of their meals. The seating arrangements in this room are far less formal than the ones you would find in formal dining table designs. In fact, this is the only table inside the house where you are likely to find benches. Whether your breakfast nook set has chairs or benches, chances are that the furniture is less formal and not upholstered. It is far more common to find upholstered chairs in a formal dining room. Since you are not likely to find upholstered chairs or benches in the kitchen, you will instead find seat cushions and bench cushions.

Cushions are a great way to make your seating arrangements more comfortable. In addition, cushions offer many other advantages when it comes to kitchen furniture. First, you can use the cushions as a decorating element. The kitchen does not offer many opportunities for decorating since almost everything in the room has some purpose. You can change the cushions often so that your decorating follows the seasons or the holidays. You can also have several different sets to bring out various colors in your kitchen tile or counter tops during different times of the year. For example, If your counter has some flecks of gold, some green, and some yellow then you might use the gold in the fall, green in the spring, and yellow in the summer.

Another advantage to using cushions is that they can be washed. If you cannot put the entire cushion in a washing machine, most have covers that can be removed and washed if necessary. And since these cushions are used in an area that is in almost constant contact with food, they are likely to get dirty.

Now that you understand the advantages of cushions, you need to choose between the many styles. There are several different shapes to choose between. Some cushions are square with sharp corners and others have rounded edges. Some have a square back and a curved front to match the counters of the chair. Others have the shape of a trapezoid where the cushion gets thinner towards the back of the chair. Then of course, there are custom made cushions for benches. Benches come in a wide variety of sizes, so it is best to get cushions for these seating areas custom made so that the measurements match exactly.

Other than shape, there is one other major design element which is how the cushions attach to or stay on the chairs or benches. Some cushions have ties at the back that are supposed to be used to tie the cushions to the rungs on the back of the chair. However, not all chairs or benches have rungs that you can tie the cushions to. In addition, the ties are rather old fashioned and traditional and would not fit in a modern kitchen. The alternative is no slip grips on the bottom of the cushion. Instead of the bottom of the cushion being as smooth as the top, it often has grips on the bottom to keep the cushion from sliding off of a chair or bench.
